Competence and skills development in VET through research

This international networking event focuses on skills and competence development, particularly through Erasmus+ programmes. On the one hand, it highlights the competences required by the labour market in the 21st century; on the other, it emphasises which competences and skills are developed through VET Erasmus+ projects. A research-based approach is adopted with regard to the second objective.

TCA description

Themes and objectives

This international networking event focuses on skills and competence development, particularly through Erasmus+ programmes. On the one hand, it highlights the competences required by the labour market in the 21st century; on the other, it emphasises which competences and skills are developed through VET Erasmus+ projects. A research-based approach is adopted with regard to the second objective. The event primarily aims to address how relevant competences are changing and which skills VET learners need in order to succeed in the labour market or in higher education. Secondly, the TCA aims to promote understanding of how Erasmus+ projects develop the professional, linguistic, transversal, intercultural and digital skills of VET learners and teachers. Thirdly, the event aims to strengthen cooperation by encouraging dialogue between VET school leaders and/or teachers from different countries and policymakers, while providing opportunities to share knowledge and experience.

The primary purpose of the meeting is to discuss the new competences arising from the accelerating pace of change in society and the labour market, and how education—both teachers and learners—can adapt to current conditions and develop the necessary competences. Relevant new skills and their development will be addressed through keynote speeches, a panel discussion and workshop sessions.

The secondary purpose of the networking event is to examine the role of the Erasmus+ programme in the adaptation process. Research findings from both national and international levels will be presented, focusing from various perspectives on the impact of activities carried out under the Erasmus+ programme on the competences of VET learners and teachers. Findings from several studies conducted over the past few years that measure competence development in close connection with participation in Erasmus+ projects will be shared.

The third purpose of the networking event is to discuss the research findings and draw conclusions from them regarding the impact of the Erasmus+ programme, for example: 1) which competence developments can be meaningfully identified; 2) how Erasmus+ projects can be designed to maximise participants' competence development; 3) how competence development can support the career paths of learners and teachers.

The main objective of the meeting is to raise awareness of relevant new competences, summarise research findings and translate them into the development of higher-level competences in VET schools.

Through structured discussions and networking sessions, we aim to provide participants with opportunities to establish valuable connections, thereby fostering long-term cooperation and effective partnerships.

Expected outcomes

1. To review the list of new competences required in the 21st century and recognise, from a broader perspective, how learners and teachers need to develop their competences in order to meet new challenges and adapt to a changing world.

2. To identify which competences and skills of learners can be developed through international programmes, particularly Erasmus+, and the extent to which these competences increase. To raise awareness of how the competences required by the labour market are developed through international programmes.

3. To prepare a list of the competences and skills to whose development the Erasmus+ programme makes a significant contribution. To compile examples of good practice from schools that support skills and competence development, with the aim of improving the effectiveness of the Erasmus+ programme and maintaining or increasing learners' competence levels after they return from international programmes.
