CLIMA-READY YOUTH: Empowering Young People for Climate Adaptation and Disaster Preparedness through Innovative Youth Work
This concept focuses on “CLIMA-READY YOUTH: Empowering Young People for Climate Adaptation and Disaster Preparedness through Innovative Youth Work” and proposes a learning design for young people and youth workers that can be piloted in partner countries. Participants discuss local risk scenarios with qualified specialists and practise role allocation through safe tabletop exercises. Environment and Climate Action is addressed through complementary tasks. Partners compare local pilots and turn useful practices into a resource that can be adapted to different settings.

Logic chain from need to impact
- 1
Need
Young people know about disaster and climate risks but cannot describe their local risks or what to do in a disaster, and youth workers lack methods for this. Evidence: a short risk-awareness survey with young people, a review of local disaster plans.
- 2
Objective
Enable young people to recognise local climate and disaster risks and plan safe preparedness steps.
- 3
Activity
With expert guidance, young people map the risks in their neighbourhood, run tabletop scenario exercises and compare with young people in the partner country.
- 4
Output
A scenario-based workshop set for youth workers and local risk maps prepared by young people.
- 5
Measurable impact
Measurement: a preparedness knowledge survey before and after the workshops, number of young people preparing an emergency kit or family plan. Example target: the workshop set becoming a regular programme at the municipal youth centre.
Why is this example strong?
- The topic is highly relevant and offers a concrete benefit to young people's lives.
- Safety is ensured through expert guidance and tabletop exercises.
- Measurement tracks behaviour (preparedness steps), not just knowledge.
How can you adapt it to your organisation?
- Add the regional disaster management authority or a search-and-rescue association as an expert stakeholder.
- Base the risk map on the young people's own neighbourhood; participation and ownership increase.
- Name the municipal youth centre as a dissemination partner.

Objectives
• Identify initial needs and develop learning competences related to “CLIMA-READY YOUTH: Empowering Young People for Climate Adaptation and Disaster Preparedness through Innovative Youth Work”. • Produce and test an accessible preparedness guide and scenario-based learning cards; also a local action plan and evidence-based environmental activities with participants. • Monitor progress through risk recognition, reliable source selection and team communication and integrate effective practices into regular institutional learning.
Activities
1. Identify needs and shared goals Gather participant views on “CLIMA-READY YOUTH: Empowering Young People for Climate Adaptation and Disaster Preparedness through Innovative Youth Work”; define access barriers, responsibilities and success indicators. 2. Joint preparation and learning workshop Co-design sample tasks for an accessible preparedness guide and scenario-based learning cards and review them with a small group. 3. Local pilots and international exchange Participants discuss local risk scenarios with qualified specialists and practise role allocation through safe tabletop exercises. Partners share sample work and discuss differences between local contexts. 4. Evaluation, sharing and continuity Assess learning through risk recognition, reliable source selection and team communication, improve resources and incorporate them into regular institutional practice.
Dissemination
Results are introduced to youth organisations and local youth networks through a practical sharing session. Partners publish an accessible preparedness guide and scenario-based learning cards; also a local action plan and evidence-based environmental activities with accessible Turkish and English explanations and plan adaptations into other partner languages. Uptake is tracked through feedback from organisations that try the materials, alongside downloads. Shared examples respect personal data and content permissions.
Budget Logic
Resources are planned for specialist input, scenario design, accessible guides and safe practice arrangements. Each activity is justified by its output and required staff effort or materials. Existing tools and remote collaboration are considered; face-to-face meetings are designed around their learning contribution. Participant numbers, duration and grant amount are set after needs analysis; the source project grant is not treated as this concept’s budget.
